Redhead Goby

Elacatinus puncticulatus

Familia: Gobies (Gobiidae)
Tamaño: Up to 4 cm (1.5 in) | Común 2.5 cm
Profundidad: 1 – 20m (3 – 65ft)

Distribución: Eastern Pacific (Gulf of California to Ecuador, including the Galapagos).

Identificación: A microscopic gem of the reef.

  • Patrón de color: Difficult to see due to their extremely small dimensions, but easily identifiable once spotted by their striking coloration: a bright, fiery red/orange head featuring a neon blue line over the eye, followed by a pale, nearly transparent body.
  • Perchado: Like most gobies, their pelvic fins are fused together to form a small suction cup on their belly, allowing them to cling to rocks even in strong currents.

Comportamiento: A tiny fish with complex ecological roles.

  • Cleaning Stations: Much like its Caribbean relatives, it acts as a cleaner fish at specific reef "cleaning stations." It removes parasites and dead skin from larger clients—a mutualistic relationship that keeps clients healthy, reduces their risk of predation, and provides a steady food source for the goby.
  • Habitat Associations: They are often found closely associated with the Slate Pencil Sea Urchin (Eucidaris thouarsii), using the thick spines for structural protection.
  • Breeding & Parental Care: They exhibit fascinating breeding behaviors, showing intense loyalty to their chosen breeding sites where they continuously return to lay eggs. The males take on the responsibility of guarding and caring for the eggs with high dedication until they hatch and disperse into the open water.
