A rare purple Roughjaw Frogfish (Fowlerichthys avalonis) blending perfectly into the rocky reef background in Bahía Solano.

Adulto 

Familia: Peces rana (Antennariidae)
Tamaño: Hasta 35 cm (14 in) | Común 15 cm
Profundidad: 1 – 100m (3 – 330ft)
Distribución: Pacífico Oriental (California hasta Perú).

Identificación:
The "Rugged" cousin of the frogfish family.

  • Textura: The key identifier is the skin. Unlike the smoother Sanguine Frogfish, the Roughjaw is covered in tiny, prickle-like spines (bifid spinules) that give it a sandpaper-like or "scabby" texture.
  • Marcas: Suelen ser de color rosado, rojo o marrón. La mayoría de los adultos presenta una mancha negra distintiva (ocelo) rodeada por un fino anillo naranja en la aleta dorsal, que parece un ojo falso.

Comportamiento:
Un depredador solitario de emboscada.

  • Hábitat: Prefiere arrecifes rocosos y salientes, donde su textura áspera le permite camuflarse entre algas incrustantes y esponjas.
  • Caza: Like all frogfish, they possess a lure (illicium) to attract prey, but the Roughjaw's lure is shorter and thicker than other species.
